Medical costs were rising and twice the rate of inflation. If that is allowed to continue, only the 1% would be able to afford to to see a doctor. The real problem is the cost and effectiveness of the medical care system. The conservative approach is just great if you don’t mind dying in the streets.

There are many problems that create increases in medical costs. One is the insane cost of diagnostic equipment. Pharma is a big one; they are now creating artificial shortages to drive up prices. Insurance companies are mostly overapaid paper-pushers.

Although many complain about legal shenanigans, they have been significantly reduced over the years, thanks to maximum caps that states have put into place. There are still too many lawyers, which leads to too many lawsuits, but medicine is no longer the number one target (hint: Wal-Mart).

One of the main problems, however, is overuse of the system. Our society feels entitled to abuse its health, and don’t you dare try to make me be more healthy. As long as we insist on eating over 100 pounds of sugar per year (include “hidden” sugars like dextrose, sucrose, maltose, and the ever-popular high-fructose corn syrup), as long as we don’t want to exercise, as long as we want fast food three to four times per week, we have to expect costly consequences.

I don’t want a nanny government either, but if you are overweight, have high blood pressure and diabetes and a sedentary lifestyle, I’m paying to help keep you healthy, and this is likely an unnecessary expense.
