Dogs don’t like to be alone, so there wouldn’t be so many nights out, anyway. As for Calvin, I’m pretty sure he Knows he will be an “only child”…only one “Stupendous Man” per household! ;)

One of the best Calvin strips I ever saw had in the last panel father saying on the phone: “Honey, I am in a meeting right now…don’t you think we can talk about that operation when I get home?”

Don’t blame it all on Mom, Dad. You were there. She didn’t make Calvin out of Playdoh.

Why worry about something that isn’t going to happen for hours yet?

Unfortunately, we’ve now got a generation of young people perfectly comfortable living in the basement whether they have jobs or not.

I agree. It’s apparent reading this that Calvin’s parents aren’t happy they had a child which explains a lot of things, like why he’s had to animate his stuffed toy into a best friend, in a very over the top way. There are many, many people who have children who aren’t really planned for, wanted, or loved for various reasons. We have close friends who wisely felt that they could not shoulder the responsibilities and so chose not to have children and we’ve told them that we applaud that very grown-up decision. My wife and I felt the other way and put everything we had into it and our now grown children are doing well in their lives, always knowing they’re loved and supported. If there’s a point to this comic strip it should be a warning to people that raising a child is a huge, full-time, never ending job and that the needs of a child are not manufactured or contrived and that as an adult you will have to give, and give, and give to meet those needs and if you’re not ready for that you might just tell all those inquisitve friends and relatives that you’re not going to bring children into the world just to please their expectations. Is there anyone reading this who would dispute that it’d be a much better world if all children were planned for, wanted, loved, respected, and had their real needs met? One more thing about children to those who are thinking about becoming parents; children are expensive, so you might want to have your financial house in order first. My own parents resented every dime I cost them, as if it came as a shock to them that children need things and cost money.

Too negative folks. Calvin is a typical boy, he will be structive; he can be either constructive or destructive, just depends upon how he is instructed. Too many boys today are not allowed to be boys, boisterous, irascible, and slightly defiant. He generally does what he is told but may have his own way of doing it. If Mr. Watterson had followed Calvin to adulthood like Lynn Johnston in her strip I am sure that Calvin would be a fine self-sufficient adult. I’m not going to comment on any previous poster’s experiences growing up, those are theirs. I put that baggage down long ago and made sure none of my kids had to carry it.

Calvin getting a job: Interesting thought. Would you want to be waited on by Calvin? Or rely on any product Calvin produced or designed?

You could have also bought a condom if you didn’t want to have him. But then, you wouldn’t have gotten your full pleasure would you? So now you pay for it!
