Next to “id” in the dictionary, there is a picture of Calvin.

You may not like the special treatment you’re going to get, Calvin! ;)

And 20+ years later, wasn’t Calvin’s Father prescient?

If exoticdoc2 and bluskies read the yesterday’s strip, they would know his parents do not let him get away expecting “special treatment.”If they read Sunday’s strip, they would know that his father fancies himself something of a radical.

It works if those around you are conditioned to give you what you want so as to stop your whining…. Ifthey aren’t, you may have a problem.

Reminds me of one of my in-laws. She refused to work outside the home even after her children were in middle/high school, bemoaned her financial situation and lousy marriage, and her family excused her situation by saying she had low self-esteem. Know how you can get some self-esteem AND improve your financial situation? By having a job!

Yup, there it is….a Gen Xer in the making. That’s what happens when you tell kids that everyone is special. They grow up thinking you mean “you are a special case, deserving special treatment—Just because you’re YOU!”

Those kids of the late 80s and 90s are the grownups now. That explains a lot.

There are parents out there who would give in to your whining, Calvin, but not your parents fortunately.

If you wanted immediate gratification, Calvin, why didn’t you do your homework immediately instead of putting it off for two or was it three days?

Nothing builds self-esteem like failure – and you get up the next morning, and somehow life still goes on.

Complaints don’t always improve the situation:My complaint was that the water bill came due a couple days before payday each month.Solution: They tripled the late fee!!(and went from 2-month to 1-month billing)

I think Calvin is only saying what a million other people are afraid of saying. His dad should be proud.

This is an example of what I don’t like about the second half of Calvin & Hobbes’ run. At some point the line was crossed from funny social commentary to heavy-handed editorializing.

Likely he knows that Calvin will be distracted within another 30 seconds, give or take.
