Toni has Shannon well trained to help keep Brad from getting too intimate. This seems to make it more likely that she will in fact ask Brad to adopt Shannon as soon as they get married, for that same purpose.

It’s possible that she just wanted to let him know that she thinks of him, when she wears his fav color.. We as men hear certain things, and it’s automatic. Sometimes, women just like to keep a guy’s interest piqued, but not always “going there” … – Women can say and think in one way, but we guys will hear and think “something else”….

Since they have to share their ’Quality Time", with each other, and now with Shannon, it makes me think of some songs related to viewing time as valuable commodity:

“Time”, Pink Floyd“No Time This Time”, the Police“Time Stand Still”, Rush“Tme In A Bottle”, Jim Croce“No Time”, the Guess Who“Give Me Just A Little More Time”, the Chairmen Of The Board“Time Has Come Today”, the Chambers Brothers“Tomorrow Never Knows”, Beatles“Does Anybody Really Know what Time it Is” Chicago“Too Much Time on My Hands” Styx“Time Passages” Al Stewart

Politics, period. I think they are intimate, but perhaps not as often as they’d like. I have the feeling also that Jonah doesn’t pay much attention to her, so when he dumps her on Toni, she tries to make up for lost time, especially since she knows that Brad is such a soft touch.

Anyway, as stated above, The “captain” retiring may be something to keep an eye on. We’ll see. Otherwise, I think they just have to find a way to have more private time without Shannon getting dumped on them.

With the Captain’s retirement, could there be changes at Brad’s (?) station? Both are too young to be promoted to Captain, but this could lead to some interesting development.

A vacancy in the officers’ ranks shouldn’t have any impact on the firefighters (who in many departments have to be promoted to 1st class, senior, master, and driver, based on years of seniority). The only impact would be that a lieutenant fills the captain’s slot, and a firefighter has to be promoted to lieutenant. That promotion would require many more years of service than Toni or Brad have (even put together), so yeah, that’s probably what will happen, by-passing all the other firefighters in Pitt who have worked at their jobs for years or even decades longer. Welcome to the Luannverse, guys!

    > don’t you get tired of spouting the same old drivel?>Doesn’t Greg Curtis get tired of drawing it? As others have pointed out, how many times has Shannon interrupted them now? It’s clearly by design (Greg’s, and probably Toni’s).

What about Brad/Toni makes them good foster parents? In the past two comics, Brad is openly disgusted that Shannon is there and then they want her to leave them alone for a while.

If you look back at some of the previous strips, you’ll see that Brad and Shannon have had some very excellent encounters together, when they’re alone. Brad actually has some very decent parenting skills, when he’s able to demonstrate them. He’s been able to get Shannon to comply with things.. perhaps even more so than Toni, who might appear to Shannon as the “established” authority figure (the “heavy”), always to be challenged.

The extreme responses on Shannon are kind of fascinating. On the one hand, we have those who condemn her as a manipulative brat who should be shut into a dark, padded closet with a deadbolt on it, or at the very least, slapped upside the head.-On the other hand, we have those who have a knee-jerk response toward Brad and Toni, and condemn them for wanting time together instead of demonstrating love for Shannon by catering to her every whim.-I suspect that the truth (if there is one) is somewhere in between. Shannon behaves well when she feels like she matters, and Brad and Toni both do care about her. But they also want some together time, which they don’t get when they unexpectedly become Shannon’s babysitters.-Since we have adopted kids in my family and I know that there are challenges with this option, I would actually not favor a young couple just getting started as adoptees, unless they were highly motivated.

Regardless of how he interacts with her, he is never happy when Toni shows up with her.

I don’t think he blames Shannon for that. I think he blames either Jonah for causing the situation, and/or Toni for allowing it happen (secondarily), because it means less time alone with Toni. I don’t think it affects how Brad feels about Shannon, herself.

    That Said:

Shannon is a burden on both of them. Again, I wonder why they would adopt her when they don’t apeear to have enough time for each other. They are NOT ready for kids.

If Shannon’s father decides he can’t handle Shannon and is considering adoption, he should let a foster family take her that has both the time and love that Shannon needs. Brad/Toni don’t really have either for her.

I actually agree that it’s way too early for Brad & Toni to be raising a child. But they may not have much of a choice if Jonah foists the scenario upon them.

It all comes down to how much they love Shannon and see potential in her… potential that could come to full fruition if they did adopt her, and (conversely) waste away, or worse, if they remand her to the foster care system. How much do Brad & Toni consider Shannon “family,” and would they abandon a “family” member like that? Having lost both her parents, I’m thinking Toni would not abandon her, if the issue were actually forced. She is “family.” And, because Brad does seem to do very well with Shannon, and they’ve started to bond, I don’t think he’d object either, in that case. I just hope it doesn’t turn out to be the case, because they really do need some time alone to do all those things newlyweds do. Raising children should be a bit more towards the latter part of their timeline. Not all the way at the end, but also not at the very beginning, either.

Not every interaction with a child need be considered parenting.Unplanned interruptions and irritation at same is not same as disdane at chilt.Further, TJ and Shannon get along well or else he “hides his disdain” well. And most cheered the fingervore action, not because they wish my beloved Shannon to misbehave, but we like rude people who stick their fingers in children’s faces to regret said action.. When my son was full of energy, usually as he fought sleepiness, I had him load dishes, run the dishwasher, load clothes, wash clothes, dry clothes, fold and store clothes, unload the dishwasher all the while engaging him in his subject of the day until such time as he realized, "I’m sleepy, " and went to bed..He’s a world-class adult now.

That is the way a child acts if she is much younger than her siblings. She wants to be included. She wants attention. A third party, Mom or Dad, would usually put the child in her place, but there is no third party here to do it.

Just to show how very differently people react to this strip: only one comment on the ArcaMax site today is about Shannon and her possible brattiness. And none of the comments are about whether Toni and Brad are involved in more than holding hands. The rest of the comments are about how adults perceive the passage of time so differently from kids.
