Near as I can tell: judging by the TV shows that come and go, the Nielsens must go out to the kind of people that like laugh tracks and reality shows. People advocate high quality fare; but ratings prove that they prefer mental and cultural pablum.
I’ve found that any show I really like is likely to be gone quickly. The last few years, I watch less than 2 hours a week, and that is mostly just passing through the living room, or watching the news at dinner. My wife, on the other hand, hardly ever turns it off. What she watches, I won’t.
They tried to get me to do that earlier this year. I had to tell them no several times before they quit calling me. They even sent a couple of dollars as “incentive” for me to do all that. I put them in my donate to the SPCA piggy bank.
