    I’ve worked for a vet and had numerous rescue dogs. A truism among rescuers is that rescued animals know when they’re being helped. In the course of being helped I’ve seen them endure things I know hurt without so much as lifting a lip. The ones who run away from would-be helpers are, I think, the ones who are sure they can get back home.
