Back in the days of fountain pens ( remember those ? ) I would always graciously lend people my pen when asked, but keep the top. Funny, I always got my pen back.
That’s why, before retirement, all my tools at work were engraved with my name. And if you borrowed a tool, you didn’t borrow a second until the first was returned. (In that time frame anyway, engineers loved to borrow and not return tools from technicians.)

You go to the bank to take out a LOAN; the bank LENDS you the money. See the difference?(‘lend’ is a verb; ‘loan’ is a noun.)
