Oh yes, they are. They actually do pay but also rake it in even more (secondary support services generate jobs and boosts local economies). Your country also got to play big honcho and entered new consumer markets, spreading American consumer joy everywhere. It was a symbiotic relationship which both parties benefited from. It suited your country’s economy just dandy.
With the end of the Cold War, Europe strategically isn’t as important as before, Americans are leaving their European bases and heading East. Whew, at long last. Although Chagossians are still suffering and I don’t foresee tensions decreasing much in their back-yard, the Pacific. But hey, sell more burgers to the Koreans.
