Good morning, vagabonds. Today I wrote and addressed 22 Jewish New Year’s cards. The New Year doesn’t come until Sept. 2/3, but I wanted to get this done in time.

For any WWI buffs: You know that the sovereigns of Britain, Germany and Russia were closely related, but the Emperor of Austria-Hungary was very distantly related (he was Catholic while the others were Protestant or Eastern Orthodox) I used the website of Leo Van Pas (I’ve been using his posted info on royalty/nobility for years) to see when the king of Britain and the emperor of Austria had their most recent common ancestor (MRCA). I figured that George V and Franz Joseph (who my Galician grandmother adored) were 7th cousins – the MRCA was a Brunswick Herzog (nobleman) who lived in the 1600s.

I emailed Leo to ask him if that was correct and he replied that George V and Franz Joseph were actually 5th cousins once removed. Not so far away: my nieces and nephews have 5th cousins, according to my family research, but I don’t know of any cousins beyond my own 4th.

Morning, Vagabonds. When I was kid growing up, I was told that we were kin to Davy Crockett on my mother’s side and Sam Houston on my father’s side. When I did my research, I discovered that we were no kin to Crockett at all, and that our relationship to the Houston family had to be traced several generations back to 17th century England. But surprise, surprise. On my mother’s side I am indeed a fifth cousin, twice removed, to (are you ready for this?) (drum roll please) … Wyatt Earp.

    Good Morning, Vagabonds,

We have some storms coming over to us for the next 4 days. Yipee! Unfortunately, I just closed the windows, it’s too cold with the wind coming in.

Genealogy…………….I grew up being told that there was Royalty in our family……..on my father’s side. Some prince of Poland. Never researched it, though. For some reason, I don’t have the ambition to take on the project.

Gotta get out in the garden and make sure everything is secure before the storms hit.

    Good morning, Vagabonds.

My paternal grandmother told me that her family (Herron) was distantly related to William Howard Taft. I would have to look it up to be sure of the exact relationship, but like Rita, I don’t have the ambition for it.I do have all of the paperwork necessary to trace my own ancestry back to the American Revolution. My dad’s sister was a member of the DAR and I got copies of all of her documentation after she passed away. My ancestor was an enlisted man at Valley Forge.

@DAVID> Wow!~ The 17th century! And I only know my ancestry back to 1773 and I don’t know who anyone more distant than 4th cousins may be, let alone 5th cousins twice removed.

My niece is into genealogy and has traced my family on my father’s side back to when the first one came over in 1635. She has never done much tracing of the family history back in England. She has done some on her father’s side in England. It takes a lot of time and effort to do this. She still is finding out things about both my father’s and my mother’s sides. You chase a lot of false leads.
