@ellisaana. In reply to “who wears a watch now”. I DO! And not everyone uses a cell phone or carries one with them. I’m in my mid-50’s — why would I want to dig a phone out of my purse to see the time when I could just look at my wrist? :)
I have a cell phone that I use to answer calls when I’m out… but not while I’m driving… then, I call the person back once I’m parked. .I have a watch that’s mechanical — it winds itself keeps excellent time, gives me the date, and is water resistant so I don’t need to take it off when I swim or shower..Works well for me.
So, what so special about John. He is just like most Fathers today—always there when needed for advise on how to keep automobiles running but for NOTHING else and forgotten on Father’s Day while Mom on Mother’s Day gets long distance calls and cards and trampled by granddaughters who barely acknowledge grandpa’s presence.
In NY the fine for having a phone in your hand, for any reason,(like checking the time) while driving, is $270 for a regular driver. For a commercial driver, like say in a School Bus, the fine is $2750!Needless to say, I wear a watch.
For me a watch is handier than my phone because I don’t always have the phone with me. Got one of those eco drive watches that is solar powered. Have had it for four years and still on the same battery. Watch or no watch is just a matter of what works for you. Happy Fathers Day!!
I do like pretty watches and my husband loves watches (as much as his smart phone). He wears one every day, and a watch is always a good gift for him. Although it’s been many years since a “gold-toned” digital watch has been in style. LOLI too am disappointed that this wasn’t a Father’s Day comic, so here’s to all the fathers out there…
@ellisaanaI, too wear a wrist watch. Most people that I know do. Unless you are attached to your phone like an umbilical cord, taking it out just to check the time is inconvenient at best and incredibly rude to the people around you as well.
About three years ago, I asked a young friend why he didn’t wear a watch. He said he used the clock on his cell phone. “Cellphone’s have clocks?” Obviously I’m NOT a heavy cell phone user LOL. Once I thought about it, I realized that of course they had clocks, but I had never used mine for one. It hangs on my purse, so it isn’t always on my person. I wear a watch.
It’s a shame they didn’t run a strip for Father’s Day today.
So, for all the men here who are birth fathers, adoptive fathers, stepfathers, foster fathers, grandfathers or for any caring men who have stepped in as father figures for those who needed them and filled the role of absent fathers . . . this one’s for YOU!!!!!
I definitely wear a watch. I had one I really liked, but its battery died, and friendly stores that replace batteries for a pittance are resting alongside buggy-whip manufacturers. It’s much cheaper to schlep over to KMart and get a new one. (Handy household tip: Do NOT wear your watch over your sweater, even if the watch face twists down so you have to turn it or your wrist. I lost two watches before I figured this one out. Would take off my sweater, and WHOOPS!)
What a find! I can tell the artist how much I love her comic strip! Friends and I comment on how well you understand children (love it) and dogs (them, too). This is a total favorite strip! Deloghtful!

Of course this is a pre-cellphone cartoon, but who wears a watch now, unless it’s worn as jewelry.

When you’re in a NY subway, your cellphone won’t work, so you will need a watch.

This was a good strip today but it seems we ought to have gotten a Father’s Day one. As much as we pick on John he is a pretty good father.

Ahh remember the days when you could only get a digital watch in a jewelry store and not at the supermarket check out!

It’s her Father’s Day gift to dad who said the stuff would look much better on her than it would on him.

And some folks, like myself, have no need for a cell phone. I’m perfectly content with my old style analogue wrist watch.

These are all reruns of previous strips. I’d say the Father’s Day one may fall next week.

Good for Elly! I am glad she is treating herself but I am surprised she has earned enough at her part-time job to afford a watch.
