sigh yet another Country legend gone… I like some of today’s artists very well but the artists of yesteryear will always be the greatest I don’t think any of todays artists will ever be truly called a Country legend!

All the pioneers are leaving us, joining Heaven’s band…can you imagine what they will sound like?

“Who’s gonna fill their shoes? Who’s gonna stand that tall? Who’s gonna play the opry, and the Wabash Cannonball?”

And Roger Ebert also gone today. He would have given Jack Greene two thumbs up.

If you made a list of the best loved folks in Nashville, and in the world of Country Music, Jack Greene would have been at the top. He is of an era of men and women who simply do not exist anymore. For many, many reasons. Not really all about personal integrity, either. Simply, like the ballplayers of old……they travelled together, and sang together, and lived life’s ups and downs together on Silver Eagle buses…..like the ballplayers used to ride the train. Now folks ride planes or individual buses…..and they don’t hang out backstage at The Opry. They are in and out…because management says to. But back not so long ago…..What happened was that these performers got close to each other…..close to their bands…and their fans. One of my best friends was Billy Walker, who passed away a while ago. If you don’t know him…look him up. You’ll be better for it. Or Del Reeves…or Porter Waggoner. They gave me a hand up in the business. All good men….great artists….and friends to me. All gone. I miss the hell out of them. Same with my cartooning heroes. We were family. Honest. We really were. That is SUCH a CLICHE now….but WE WALKED IT. DIDN’T TALK IT.These folks were OF US and FOR US. And unforgettable to everyone they ever met. That old saying….“Shake every hand in front of you, kid…” they did. They helped a lot of folks up the ladder to success……just as others had helped them. I did the same as success came my way. That’s the deal you have with The Lord. Your heart. That’s how WE see it. Jack started as a drummer in Ernest Tubb’s band….and ET gave Jack solo songs on his albums…..till Jack was SO BIG he let him go….right into a record deal and a string of Number Ones. Anyway….on today’s artists….there ARE folks who will be legends, I think. And are real good human beings. Living in Nashville….I know them. Like Garth. They don’t get any bigger than Garth. And Garth was at Jack’s Memorial Service. Garth, btw, is a gracious, warm, compassionate and very funny guy! Vince Gill would have been there but for an emergency. Vince and Amy are great people who do so so much for so many. Quietly. Charlie Daniels is one of the best, most giving men on the planet, and a very close friend.EmmyLou. Ricky Scaggs. Awesome folks. And of the new….I’ll tell you, Kellie Pickler will go out of her way anytime. So will Trace Adkins. I think Carrie Underwood will go down as a legend when it’s all said and done….and Troy and Eddie of Montgomery Gentry and Darius Rucker are as good as you can get. Hey. I’ve gone on too long. Take care. Go listen to some good music….whatever genre. Smile.

Shania is already a legend. I was focusing on folks I know, however…and I don’t know Shania, sadly.
