It’s almost always the money when it comes to horses. I guess Luann’s parents were supposed to be so well off that money wasn’t the problem. Rare in the time period this comic was drawn.
Aah, you know how kids and young teenagers want something NOW, rather than when they’re older! Well, part of that is the desire to impress other people as to how “cool” they are. But once the novelty wears off, then what? Yep, horses DO have to be taken care of; it has never been cheap, then OR now! Even if you COULD be taken back a century to a century-and-a-half ago: well, you’d better avoid the autumn-winter months of 1872, and into ‘73! That was the time of the Great Epizootic of 1872 (basically a horse-flu epidemic!). For the most part, the afflicted horse coughed violently, and was unable to even stand up; much less support a rider, or pull a cart! For instance, firefighters in downtown Boston on November 9-10 of that year (trying to battle the Great Fire there) had to make do without the benefit of their horses. In addition, being thus unable to transport their goods, a great many businesses lost money in fairly short order (as a result); a key contributing factor to the ensuing Panic of 1873. And since there was no FDIC then, if your bank lost your money, well then you were just out of luck! When there truly is no other convenient form of transportation (the railroad industry was fairly young then), if you couldn’t even depend on your trusty steed, it was just too bad. Nope, life in general was no picnic. And so consider yourself lucky to be living nowadays, Luann, rather than back then; there really is no choice anyway.
The Parakeet isn’t her fault.It flew away with a Sparrow and the two built a nest together to raise little Sparrowkeets..BTW, in spite of posts claiming they are “Impossible”, I’ve SEEN sparrows with Parakeet Wings or tail feathers and Parakeets with Sparrow feathers on parts of their bodies..It happened after a Hurricane released a pet dealer’s stock of tropical birds into the wild. Over the next couple years we had all sorts of “interesting” birds flying around with the Sparrow flocks that passed through our neighborhood..Since they vanished over the next several years, I’ll assume the various crossbreeds turned out to be “mules” incapable of reproducing themselves..And, that the wild Parakeets were unable to find enough of the “Right” sort of food to survive in Florida & Georgia..

If you can’t take care of something easy like a freshwater fish or parakeet, then you are not responsible enough to take care of a horse.
