Wouldn’t’a thought he was old enough to remember the Monkees…even given the age of this repeat strip…but, maybe he caught it one of the times MTV reran it.
I remember that I started to listen to Oldies (Beatles, Little Richard, etc) when I was in 4th grade in 1984. Maybe that’s what happened to Knute: He got bored with his normal tapes and popped one of his parents into his Walkman.

The Monkees reruns were on TV around this time due the 20th anniversary of the show (our local station played them on Saturday mornings).
MTV also tried to reboot the series in 1987.
