Good morning, Vagabonds. A thought: I was planning to buy a new combo answering machine-phone because the 6 and 9 digits don’t work. But why should I buy a new phone when I now have a cellphone that I can use to dial any number I need? I can still receive calls on myland answering machine-phone combo.
Good morning. It’s a rainy day here in South Florida. I am thinking about Roger Ebert and how much he contributed to my film-watching experience. I usually liked any movie he liked and especially recall a 1997 film that most of the critics panned, yet Ebert gave it a thumbs up and 4 stars; I watched it and liked it! (“Eve’s Bayou”) Roger will be missed, but he leaves a legacy behind and his reviews of classic films (“Great Movies”) will endure and be read as long as such movies are viewed. EBERT’S GREAT MOVIES
Morning, Village.@Arye – My question is, why have a land line at all? I can’t convince my wife, but the cell phone does everything I need. I call out, receive calls, auto-dial, have long-distance service included in the package (including calls to Europe), and even have a mobile answering machine. Why pay for a device I don’t need, or pay the phone company for services I already have?
@Florchi – I agree totally about Ebert. If he gave a film a “thumbs up,” I could usually trust him to recommend a good movie. I already miss Siskel. Now they’re both gone.
Thanks for the Ebert link, Florchi. There are only a few on that list that I’ve never heard of. And, the huge majority of which I agree with his thumb’s up rating.
I’m with everyone else, Arye, why have a land line at all. The biggest feature of cell phones only is two fold. First, you can register for no solicitation phone calls, and secondly, you can also register for the reverse 911 calls in case of some emergency in your neighborhood. You can be away from home, and still get the hurricane warning or whatever. Also, your phone is a great GPS device for 911 calls you are making. We haven’t had a land line for over 5 years, and have not had a need for it at all.

I’ll add my two cents about Roger Ebert. I, too, trusted his reviews more than anyone else’s. He not only gave his own opinion, he gave enough detail about the movie to let you know why he did or didn’t like it. Many times I either watched or stayed away from a movie because he described something in that movie on which I had a definite opinion. He’ll be missed.
Arye: I’ll agree with everyone else. You don’t really need a land line anymore. We each have a cell phone and we have a third one we use as a “home phone” (although it really is a cell phone). The beauty of cell phones is that phone solicitors are not allowed to call them because usage is charged by the minute. We don’t get those dinner-time telemarketers any more at all.
My oral surgeon says I am perfect (I’m sure he meant the implants, but I said “Thank you.” anyway.), so I went on to my regular dentist and he has everything set up to do the “abutments” and impressions on the 22nd. I should have my permanent crowns about a week later. And, Rita, I will have Michael photograph my smile and use it for an avatar for a while. It’s expensive, but it is so much better than the partial I am wearing now it is definitely worth it!
@JanCinLV:You mentioned that phone solicitors are not allowed to call cell phones. I have to disagree with you as every now and then I get calls from them and if I don’t answer the phone, they leave a voice message. They are the same ones that call on my land line. My land line is part of a package with my cable and my internet so it is a good deal.
Hi Vagabonds.It’s a little late been a busy day, moving my nephew.I’ve never moved in my life, but, I’ve moved my family and friends enough to stay right here untill I move into the silent city, and I won’t care..David, you’ll be moving soon, sorry I won’t be able to help you out. ;-).With a smile on my face I say good night..ttfn

when i visit friends and family who have land-lines I’m always surprised how many solicitation calls they receive.
