Funny, but I’m tired of this unfairness in the criticism of Ben Affleck playing Tony Mendez in Argo. Mr. Mendez made it very clear in a lengthy article published in last week’s Chicago Tribune that he does not consider himself to be Hispanic. His ancestry is mixed: Irish, Italian, and Mexican. He never learned to speak Spanish. Mr. Mendez, and only Mr. Mendez, is the artibtrer of his ethnicity — and in this case he clearly feels that being of 1/3 Mexican ancestry does not trump this 2/3 European ancestry. Even Lalo Alcaraz should respect that.
