Out in the field greasing the combines and feuling up. Usually the combines are rolling not long after sunrise, and they may still be rolling at nine or ten at night. And always hoping breeze will be blowing across the combine and not with it in the cutting line.…Hay? I’ve bucked oat hay just east of Sacramento. Three wire bales that averaged 150 to 200 pounds. Toughest hay i have ever worked with. I bucked wild hay in Colorado at 10,000 feet between the east and west ranges of the Rockies a few miles south of the Wyoming border. Wasn’tvery far from Laramie.After I finished in Sacramento, I wound up in Conrad, Montana. I was early for the wheat harvest, but alfalfa hay had to be stacked. So I found a couple of guys, and we contracted to bring in hay for a grower. Conrad was a bit of a boomtown at the time. There were rocket silos being dug all over the place.…I worked on a three man, 49 foot bottom fisher, We’d go west til we were beyond the islands in 60-70 fathom water. I talked about “hauling on line” til it hurt. Moment of truth about that, actually we had electric reels.…“I’ve made maple during Spring’s early cold.” Mark, i’ve never forgotten the sugar house, the big sap trays and how to judge how ready the syrup was with a wire hoop.I also remember going down to the sugar house one cold overcast day. Never left the trays all day long, then had toforce the door open because when I got out it was dark andblowing a blizzard. couldn’t see diddly. Had to find the fence and use it to get around to the cow lot. Go through the gate to the cow lot and up the hill til I found the other gate, Up here the wind was blowing the snow along and I could feel with my feet the drive way until I saw a faint light through the blowing snow. Ah, shelter.…That pretty well covers that verse, and only one little fib. Hope you all had a comfortable night and pleasant dreams.
Good morning, Vagabonds. I’m starting to pack for my trip to Israel for Passover. I will be leaving in exactly one week. Yesterday I bought a USB-Hub for my computer so I don’t have to take my mike and mouse out of my computer when I want to put my camera’s memory chip in in order to send photos to my email/
Morning, Village.Man! We worked hard all day at the house yesterday and went to be bed so tired. Slept for 8 hours. Been a long time since I got that much sleep.
Slim….that was magnificent! You describe it so well that I can “see” what you lived! Thank you again and again!
My good news is that I went to my orthopedic doctor, and my hand surgery will be on March 29th,. He worked me into the schedule early………regular time would be a 6 week wait. So, he’ll take care of the carpal tunnel, and a cyst I have on my thumb at the same time. I’ll be able to use my hand right away, and only a dressing to cover the 2 incisions, no cast or splint. Hurray!
Jan………..we took your suggestion, and ordered “Downton Abbey” for our Dish/Blockbuster movie (it’s free from Dish) and Season 3, parts 1, 2, and 3 arrived yesterday. We turned on part 1, and REALLY enjoyed it!!!!! Great show! Thoroughly enjoyed the stories, and Maggie Smith is her usual self with her quips. Love that girl. And then, Shirley MacLaine enters the scene, and we just howled with delight! Thank you so much for suggesting this great series. The DVD had some interviews, and I really enjoyed seeing all the actors, especially the downstairs crew.
