Wow… And let me guess, this will probably be their only offer. We knew someone who lived in a very small, niche neighborhood, where the houses sold for about $1 million. That’s fine, but she was selling her house after the housing market crashed and million dollar houses weren’t selling so well. So she got an offer on her house that was probably $50,000 less than what she was asking. She turned it down because she was convinced that she would get a better offer. Of course it never came and that was her only offer, and she had to hold onto the house for another year. Never did hear what she ended up selling it for….Hello Cathy friends!That’s a difficult one, Sis!! You’re a good person to help out your MIL like that, and I hope you find a nice house at a good price soon!It’s funny because the first house that my husband and I bought together would have been perfect for you (except that it was in GA). The entire bottom floor was for the in-law suite. It had a full kitchen, fireplace, huge bedroom, walk in closet, and a deck looking out over a pond. My husband and I thought that one of our parents would live there or we would get visitors that would use it. Needless to say, no one ever slept there or used it, and neither of our parents wanted to live there. So 1/3 of the house wasn’t being used, which was one of the reasons why we ended up moving. It was really nice though.
QuietStorm – We are jealous that you are almost done with school this year! We have a looong month left until June 30. :-( Normally in GA, we are finished right before Memorial Day, so it has been painful to see all of our friends posting on FB that they are done and starting their vacations. Meanwhile, I’m dealing with incompetency and frustrations at the school and with the move back. It will be the longest/shortest summer ever. Sorry to vent, I’m not having the best of days! I hope you have a good end of year and a fantastic summer! Will you get a break for yourself also?
My guess is that these two will be kicking themselves later.
lightenup Please don’t apologize for venting…we all need to do it sometimes and we’re all friends here. I know all about school frustrations, hang in there! I hope everything works out. I don’t get a real break because I just started a little job but it’s part time so we’ll get to have fun on the weekends. The trouble is balancing work with everything else I have to do. My house is a mess! :-(
Speaking of houses, I’m sorry you’re having so much trouble finding the perfect one Mom. When I was younger, first my dad’s mom lived with us, then after she passed, my uncle’s mom lived with us (reminder: I was raised by my aunt and uncle so dad’s mom was also my aunt’s mom). We didn’t have a separate living space but we did have bedrooms and a bathroom on the 1st floor and another bathroom with a shower in the basement, there were also bedrooms on the 2nd floor. When I moved out on my own, I lived in a house that used to be rented as two apartments so it had two kitchens and a bathroom up and downstairs. It may not be perfect but maybe something like either one of those would work for your family. Good luck! :-)
People in the U.S. are out of school by Memorial Day? I’m starting to see why there are so many complaints about the educational system there. Here in Canada we go from just after (or before) Labour Day until the last week in June. Two months off is plenty – three is just ridiculous!
Get real. No one will EVER offer MORE than the asking price. If she wanted more than that, she should have listed it for more. Could even be some legal implications if they refuse to sell it for what they are asking.
I hope when we’re ready to sell OUR house someday that we’ll be lucky enough to get a full-price offer but it was built in 1985 and although we’ve done a few upgrades here and there over the years (like fully finishing the basement), it still looks and feels 31-years-old in other areas so I’m fully expecting to get low-balled … I just hope it won’t be too much because we’re going to need every penny we get from it for the next house. As for my mom, she should fair lot better on the sale of her condo because it was built in the early 2000’s and those places sell pretty quickly whenever one of them in her complex goes on the market.
Hi, rgcviper! Thanks. I hope something comes up for us soon, too, because we’re ready to go and it’s very frustrating that we haven’t yet been able to find a new home to go to when we’ve already been searching for over a year now.

lindz.coop: I’ve often wished over the last year that my mother was the “tiny house” type so that we could have one of those cute little things built and put in our (future) back yard for her to live in. Unfortunately, she’s got too much cr*p that she doesn’t want to let go of in order to do that so we’re stuck, looking for a house that may or may not exist for us, just so that she’s got plenty of room to house all that stuff in like she does now. Personally, if that were me and I were 80 years old, I’d be looking to unburden myself from things I really didn’t need and space I didn’t want to take care of anymore to lighten the load in my final years but she’s not me and it’s not really my place to say anything about it or force her to part with stuff she’s convinced she can’t live without. If she’s not happy, then believe me, NONE of us are happy. There-fore, the search goes on for a house with an in-law suite that has at least 1200 square feet for her — and her stuff — to live in, just like she has right now. {sigh}

Actually I did get a full-price offer and even one that went over full price on my last house…but it was at the very beginning of the housing boom.
