Val: Holly finished her paper?
Joan: With a bit of prodding and guidance.
Joan: If I can find research material on "Boy Bands Of The World", I can do ANYTHING.
Holly: Great topic, huh!?
The topic is not the important thing here; it’s having done the paper. Just like children reading – it’s not important what they read, but that they learn how to read and enjoy it.
Certainly would like to know what was read – if she compared them to bands of the ages consisting of all males, and saying they were boy bands (as yesterdays conversation here :p), or actually mentioned boy bands being a concept group with specific characters going being a certain “type” of guy to reach the entire demographic.
Whoa – Holly is in junior high school. Every kid I ever knew needed at least some help on the first one. Since this teacher didn’t do it in baby steps, it’s perfectly okay for her get help at home. As long as she learned something from the experience.
Back in the dark ages, we had book reports, etc but never ten page term papers until high school. I have supported myself my whlole life now, so I think I turned out somewhat responsible.
Carnegie Mellon University in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh,PA now offers a course: the complete history of the Beatles: their music and all. So imagine the papers students have to do who take this course.
It sounds to me like Aunt Joan would have to know how to find information in order to show Holly how she could do it herself. That’s not cheating, that’s teaching. Hooray Aunt Joan!!!!

Yet, she still didn’t do the research, but had someone do it for her. How is this learning? Doing the research is the point of writing the paper.

The one thing Holly is learning is how to “cheat”. She’s learning THAT skill really well!

If she couldn’t write a paper about something she’s interested in how will she do when she’s assigned a topic she’s not interested in?

Max certainly seems excited that the paper is ready to go.
No, wait—he’s just excited to go outside. My bad.

I don’t understand why she hasn’t been grounded until she is 18 for cheating.
