Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

Please don´t define the beatles or the beach boys as “boy bands” – while technically all male they are not “boy bands”.

Beach boys were not a boy band. That lame sappy crap started in the late 90s.

And group of cute guys that girls are infatuated with and assembled by record labels? The Monkees were the first.

The Beatles and the Beach Boys as a boy band?!?! Well, the Beach Boys might technically be so—after all, ‘Boys’ is in the band name—but the Beatles? If they are, then so are the Rolling Stones, Guns n Roses, etc.

Hmmm. Can’t see myself telling Dr. Brian May that he was in a boy band…

A boy band is typically young men (teen or 20’s) who sing in harmony and dance, but usually don’t play instruments. According to Wiki, “the Beatles set a precedent for boy bands to follow both in terms of marketing to young girls and certain aesthetic and musical conventions.” Sorry, but maybe the Beatles weren’t exactly a boy band, but they were very close to one.
It doesn’t matter how big and legendary a music group is, they may have still started out as a “boy band” (as much as it hurts to admit it).

The “Boy Band” topic will keep Holly busy for years! And, of course, she’ll whine to Ms. Wingit about needed more time to actually write the paper so she can do the “proper” research!

Actually, boy bands started back in the 60’s, eg The Monkees. Wikipedia lists some examples by decade: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boy_band

Can we move on?

All your comments about “Boy Band” history be great for Holly to write on. Holly is only thinking as a teen girl. Joan will help her.

Good topic…always try to write about something you know and like!!

The problem is she may not know much about them other than her impressions of their looks, which wouldn’t make much of a paper.
