Good morning, Vagabonds. Well my house guest of 1 month has left; by now he has reached South Carolina by car. I decided not to launder the linens he used plus my own laundry tonight as I must concentrate on getting up early to take the bus to Downtown Miami for my IRS appointment . It’ll be a chilly walk to the bus stop on Biscayne Blvd. but still not as cold as it is up north – everything is relative.
@Slim – that was indeed a beautiful ode to Olive Oyl (and Spinach) on 2/10. I don’t usually read Popeye, but after rereading your 2/10 comment, I went back and checked out the Sunday Strip where Popeye waxed poetic. @Aye – Good luck at the IRS. At least the weather here has warmed up a bit since the chill on Sun. & Mon. (high of 77 today, according to weather.com).

@davidf42:That’s a term I haven’t heard in a long time, ice box. I remember when my Mother and Father had one and the ice man would come and it was a big deal to get ice chips from him in the summer.
My Oregon grandparents didn’t even have an ice box. When they built their house (Southern Oregon Coast, right on the ocean front) they put a “cooler” in the enclosed back porch area. It was a small cupboard with slatted shelves and slats for the “floor” & “ceiling”, too. It was essentially open from the basement to the attic and kept things surprisingly cool. By the time I came around, they had a refrigerator and used the cooler as a pantry cupboard.
I only remember refrigerators…….But, we were watching a really old movie a few weeks back, and there was a box outside the kitchen window (it was an apartment), and the woman put the meat in it after coming home from the butcher shop. I am assuming it was winter. We’ve put things outside to cool. Always worry about attracting the animals, though.
Good afternoon. I got home from IRS at 12 noon – I will receive a nice check from Uncle Sam around the time of my birthday – I was so tired as I only had 2 hours sleep last night that I fell asleep for 3 hours.
Rita, I recommend reading the “Kate Shugak” mysteries by Dana Stabenow. Among other things, she details the subsistence lifestyle in rural Alaska. Including the " meat cache" which is basically a shed on stilts where they keep the winter’s supply of meat. The stilts prevent animal depredation. Besides, the series are really good murder mysteries. Start with “A Cold Day for Murder” and read them in the order published as they build on each other.
