Good morning, Vagabonds: I won big at Bingo last night, but I really play because I enjoy the company of the others. We need a new Bingo set – the numbers are incomplete and the new set that was bought at K-Mart dircharges the balls all over the room. It’s my assignmnet to check the web to see if there’s a better Bingo set.
I’m recording “Thief of Bagdad,” the silent film version right now. My question is: If films were silent but they were accompanied by music, (this one is by Rimsky-Korsakoff) why couldn’t the voices be recorded just as the music was?
Morning, Village.Arye, the answer to that is, it was tried. The producers experimented with putting the voices on a sound recording and playing it at the same time the film was running. But the problem was synchronization. They couldn’t get the voice to sync with the mouth movements. It looked as bad, if not worse, than watching a foreign film with the actors speaking a different language than what the audience hears. Some of the old silent films were able to introduce sound effects, however, that were quite effective, like screams, or police sirens, or whistles, or the neighing of horses, etc.
My turn in the trivia department.Which Our Gang member appeared in more episodes than any other child actor? This same actor also had the longest tenure as an Our Gang member.
Hi all, is this our gang?.Well David, I looked in IMDb, I found “Our Gang” a movie (1922), but not a series. “Little Rascals”?.We had snow last night, looks kind’da pretty out there..The movie makers also tried color by hand painting each frame of the film, made the people look like they were on fire, so they dyed the film different colors to set the mood for the seen. The black & White seens from the “Wizard of Oz” in the original release were dyed blue..Ok, I got’a go..ttfn
Tonight’s the night. Miami Herald film critic, Rene Rodriquez, predicts the winners with “Should Win” & “Will Win” picks. For BEST PICTURE: Should Win – Beasts of the Southern Wild; Will Win – Argo. And his pick for Best Documentary – Searching for Sugar Man – looks like a shoo-in.
And, speaking of Carl “Alfalfa” Switzer………………if any of you are familiar with the movie :White Christmas"……..there is a story line that the “Girls’” brother was the “Boys’” Friend in the Army……well……the picture Vera Ellen shows to the guys is Carl “Alfalfa” Switzer.

Rita, our minds must work alike. I almost put in an AKA of “Benny ‘Freckle-faced’ Haynes the dog-faced boy”. If you do a Google search of Carl Switzer, one of the photos that pops up is the snapshot that “Judy” shows to “Bob” & “Phil”.
I didn’t remember that Switzer was also in “It’s a Wonderful Life”, but now that I think back on it he was the one who thought he had a dance with Mary (Donna Reed) and George (Jimmy Stewart) cut him out. He and a friend are the ones who, in revenge, opened up the floor to reveal the pool.
I’ll post the answer tomorrow if no-one guesses it. Mickey Rooney was never in the Our Gang comedies, he was in the Mickey McGuire comedies.Alfalfa is not the correct answer, although he was in a bunch of them.
And concerning the name. Hal Roach, the producer, originally called the series “Hal Roach’s Rascals” and the first episode was named “Our Gang.” Fans soon began calling the series “Our Gang” and the name stuck. Roach later sold the entire project to MGM, but then bought 80 episodes back with the agreement that he would not use the name “Our Gang.” So he released those 80 episodes for TV syndication and called it “The Little Rascals.” Today the terms “Little Rascals” and “Our Gang” are used interchangeably.
Was it George “Spanky” McFarland? I know he started when he was about 3. An obit printed on 7/1/93 (the day after he died) quoted him as saying he was about 5 or 6 years old before he figured out that all kids weren’t in movies.
After I typed in my guess, I looked up “Spanky” and saw that he was in 94 “Our Gang” comedies. He “retired” at the age of 14. Like a lot of child stars, he wasn’t wanted as an adult actor, and other than some late-in-life ads for the video series and a stage show he did remembering the series he never really worked in Hollywood again.
