My skin has been a little dry recently. Perhaps that is the great beginning of the gay marriage apocalypse. That and I need to replace the rear tire on my motorcycle; so the end is neigh people!

I almost expected the fisherman to respond with, “Is that your way of asking me out?”-————————Mind you, I thought the guy in the suit was talking about Congress’ winter break. (They are still on break, aren’t they? Which means they can still do nothing, but do it from home.)

The gay marriage apocalypse will happen right after the US government turns on the populace and needs to be overthrown by armed “patriots,” per NRA.

It’s on Amazon; from a (5-star) review:.“Merlin Stone has written a very good book about the history of gender roles in Western society and the part religion plays in forming these roles. She also gives us insight into the nature of laws regarding sexual behavior and marriage, a subject of considerable interest right at the moment…”.The paperback is 10-and-change; the Kindle is 13+. Go figure.

Most of the folks I talk to do not really care what gays do one way or another. Most folks have gays in their families and no problem with them forming civil unions. What they do seem to care about is the “hijacking” of the word “marriage” It used to mean this and now they want it to mean that. Seems like you have to agree that if someone says they are married, and it is not the traditional marriage, a little heads-up via a different word, might be handy. Yes, it can also cause bigots to deny rights and that is a big downside.

“What you do behind closed doors is your business. I wish frankly that you’d try a little harder to keep it that way.”

If same-sex partners are free to do in public only the same things that opposite-sex partners do in public (i.e. holding hands, cuddling, kissing each other at the airport), would that satisfy you? Once all the brouhaha has died down (which is only brought on by their lack of freedom to do those things), that’s what will endure.

“What I don’t want to do is pay for your perversion.”

In what way does same-sex marriage hit you in the pocketbook?

“I don’t want you paying for my choices either,…”

Again, what does that have to do with marriage?

“…so government should get completely out of the marriage business. If you want to marry, do it in church. If you want to sign a contract, do that at the courthouse. It shall not obligate me to pay anything, however, as I did not sign it.”

“Marriage” has long been both a religious sacrament and a civil transaction (opinions may differ on which came first, but the “marriage” of the two aspects predates the English-language word “marriage”). Since it’s the religious side of it that’s now objecting to sharing the word, why isn’t the onus on them to pick a new term? A church wedding has no legal authority unless it’s registered at the courthouse anyway, while there is no legal obligation for those who have been married by a Justice of the Peace to notify any particluar religious authority.

That’s not an unreasonable response. If marriage is to be defined as a religious institution why should the government be involved? Why should they issue licenses or maintain records? When they determine how many people of what gender(s) may be involved or what benefit they can receive they are treading perilously close to violating the establishment clause.

I agree with you, Fritzoid, I don’t think the government should recognize religious marriage at all. Keep church and state separate, please…Marriage is a contract. That’s all. You must be a complete idiot if you think that two chicks committing their lives to each other is going to harm anything at all. Stop the hatred. Stop the fear….

The word “marry” means to unite or join together. It has nothing to do with the church.

Interesting factoid (or maybe not): the Greek word from which we get the English “Apocalypse” does not mean end-of-the-world catastrophe. It literally means “revealing.” That’s why the last book of the Bible is called The Apocalypse or Revelation. I know…I had nothing to contribute to today’s debate so just threw in a piece of flotsam. Read on…

when conservative gop tells people that they would not get into anyone’s business, especially private lives, they lie. they were the one’s who pushed the patriot act to have surveillance on its own people. they pass laws on what a doctor and their patient can and cannot do. they increased the government, our deficit and debt, and do things that are not paid for(iraq, afghanistan, prescription drug coverage, katrina relief, bailouts of the banks, auto industry, etc..) when they say to enforce existing gun laws, but they enacted laws (written by the nra) to make it impossible for any enforcement of gun laws (local and federal). they advocate war with anyone and any concept, but will not send their own loved ones to the front lines and sends the poor to fight. not to mention, isn’t war a sin, a scourge on mankind?

    >Women in many states are already being put under surveillance over pregnancy, arrested for still births, incarcerated and treated like slaves by Republican state govt’s today. Some women have died because of it.<

And our boy Rush has a new abortion technique to try out — tho I think it might work better as birth control for the opposite gender.

I don’t believe in gay marriage. What does that mean? It means that I’m not going to marry a man. You do what you want.

I also don’t think the word “marriage” should apply. But, by that standard, it shouldn’t apply to most hetero-marriages either.

In the end, this isn’t a battle I choose to fight.
