It’s a Catch-22. The parents have to wait up until long after midnight before the kids wind down enough to fall asleep so Santa can come – and then the kids are up before dawn wanting to open presents and the parents are zonked out because they’d only had about three hours of sleep by that time.

Any other time and Val has come close to putting a stick of dynamite in their beds to get them up—-especially school days! Happy Holidays to my fellow ‘Stone Soup’ adherents.

In my family, that’s what the filled stockings were for.. It took time to unwrap the fruit and socks and toothbrush stuffing, that it gave a bit of time to the parents!

Growing up. My parents had one rule. When we fot up, no matter what time it was or who was or wasnt awake. We could open our stocking gifts. Ten when everyone was up (including mom and dad) then its madness

I was up until 12:30am wrapping gifts, but am still happy to get up with the kiddos, as long as it’s after 7am. Their excitement is worth it. :-)

We could not open anything until after church and Mom and Dad did split services, so presents didn’t get opened until 11 or so. Later we had gumdrop trees, and no one was allowed to eat from them until Aunt Lil had come and had the first one. One year she was sick, so we drove the tree to her house so WE could then have ours!

I remember my sister getting rather too merry on wine and going to bed, leaving me to sort out the “Santa Surprise” for my then young niece, I finally crashed out on the sofa (where I was sleeping) at 04.00, in time for an excited niece at 04.30! So I had to keep her occupied until 07.00 when I figured that was enough (yay for Disney movies on VHS is all I am saying!!)
