Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

At our house we would allow one present to be chosen and opened. The rest waited till tomorrow. And no shaking of presents!

We spend Christmas eve with my sister-in-law and her son, and exchange and open presents there. Christmas morning is our time to open presents at home, and relax for a few minutes, then it’s off to my father’s house for a gathering with my father, brother and his wife, her cousin and his wife, and a young family of English immigrants that dad befriended. On Boxing day, we relax at home. And start cleaning up the Christmas mess. :)

I’m with you Evie, but then of course, we’re of the same generation trying hard to hold on to traditions. Can’t wait ‘til tomorrow and the ’big unveiling’ of Wally’s gift to Joan.

Perhaps, not everyone can be together at Christmas. Some people have to work or are away for Christmas. Thanks to all of the medical staff, police, ems, military, firemen, missionaries, etc for all that they do. Merry Christmas.

Cheer up Evie, in many parts of Europe today IS Christmas and all presents are opened on the 24th. Just tell yourself you’re celebrating Europe style this year.

Which reminds me, merry Christmas to all who celebrate it. Nice day to the rest :-)

I’m with you too, Evie. I like the excitement of Christmas Day! (But I’m fine with opening up one on Christmas Eve.)

We always allowed the girls to open one gift on Christmas Eve before we went to church. The rest waited until Christmas morning.
