DC has a subway? I know NYC has one, but I’m not sure if all the trains are running up there yet (thanks to ‘cane Sandy)..Otherwise, I don’t get this ’toon at all.
Mr. Toles has a history of ranting about the subway system, escaltors, etc. Here in FL we nip it in the bud by turning down billions in federal funds for mass transit.
Metro stations were designed to have soft lighting, but it’s gotten gloomy in as lights get dirty and/or burn out. And unfortunately light cleaning and repair always seems to take a back seat in the budget to more important stuff like track maintenance.
The DC Metro is run VERY poorly. So Toles rants. I haven’t been on it in several years now (I’m in Annapolis), but it has really gone down hill, by all accounts.

DC has the Metro, yes, a subway. I know that, and still don’t get this cartoon. Maybe you have to be a local.

Considering the flooding of the subway system on the East coast, the Cities should consider speed boat service in the subways!

LEDs are brighter and cheaper in the long run.

So does Dallas. As DART nears downtown, it goes underground – therefore a subway. I suspect most cities have them.

Yes, the underground stations are dimly lit but, it’s not like it’s dark. It’s not that bad.

Blue. But I don’t know for what purpose.

They’re all flourescent bulbs, both, on the subway cars and in the stations.
