Toles nails it! Obama in the past has proposed compromises to the GOP at the start of negotiations. The Republicans then reject his proposals, and Obama looks weak. Now he tells them what he wants and lets them counter-offer. And they got nothing.
The GOP leaders have another problem. They will have less strength in January due to the seats they lost in the House and Senate, and the smaller number of Tea Party Republicans in the seats they held. So coming up with a bandaid to get through the end of the year is not attractive. And Obama knows it.
You’re right, I can’t. I also can’t give you an example of where he has worked with my Aunt Martha. Simple reason: To work with someone you both have to make the effort, and since the GOP has been unwilling to work with him…
In 2011, Obama was willing to accept the deal that Boehner finally got around to re-offering yesterday. Boehner was pressured by the TP Republicans to back out of the deal. In the meantime, we had an election in which the majority sided with Obama on demanding tax rates go up for the top bracket. Obama wasted immense amounts of time in 2009 and 2010 trying to engage Republicans on Health Care reform and the stimulus bill, to no avail. I can’t even count the number of times Republican leaders said they were focused on one thing: make Obama a one term President. That’s hardly leadership.

Hmmm, I guess Paul Ryan’s ‘budget’ wasn’t the Republican proposal after all. -Why are Republicans so terrified at naming specific cuts?

Yes, a flat tax because 10% of 10,000 is not missed in today’s economy any more than 10% of 10,000,000.

Obama has been a master at letting the GOP get as much rope as it needs to effectively straight jacket itself.
