An interesting side note to Gasoline Alley, it was the first cartoon that featured characters aging in real time (I believe that trend ended in the 1980s, cause some of the characters would be well over 100 years old now)
Gasoline Alley sidenote 2: The strip got it’s name because it was originally a comic about automobiles, which were a relatively new and mysterious machine, at the time King created the strip
Thus ends the sad tale of Measles, in a body bag, done in by his own flaws.……………………………………………………..And what an unexpected crossover in the last panel! Has Walt been the victim of a crime? Does he know Tracy personally?
The Grim Reaper taps Measles’ shoulder, whispering “Now it’s time. No patch exists to ease the pain, as you pay for your crime. Tracy and Sam stand o’er your corpse, but you are no longer there. Leaving neither friends nor loved ones, to notice, mourn or care. Come join Anna Enog, there’s always more room in hell. You will burn, left to twist and turn, to weep, beg, scream and yell. The pain from Tracy’s bullet, Gertie’s axe blow, Sparkle’s fire, soon shall be a fond memory; your situation’s now most dire. Don’t look back, it’s an ugly sight, your corpse sprawled in the shade; you chose your path, now face the wrath, and be very much afraid.”
Mr Scancarelli is a neighbor of mine. When he is not working on Gsaoline Alley, he can be found performing at the local Blue Grass festivals. Saw him just last week shopping in Walmart. He is as nice a gentlemen as the characters in his comic strip.
Nice to see Walt make an appearance in the Tracy strip. Pay back for when Tracy appeared in the GA strip to celebrate Tracy’s 75th anniversary.
Had to check the dates, but Tracy first appears in the GA strip on 9/5/2006, when Slim calls the police and Tracy answers on his 2-way wrist radio. He helps them to solve the murder of Chester Dloug (why does that name sound familiar??) with the help of BO Plenty (seen 9/22 and 9/23) before leaving on 10/4 to celebrate his 75th anniversary with Tess. Also a reference to the Big Boy case, Tracy’s first in the comics.
Dick Moores took over Gasoline Alley completely in 1959, 10 years before King’s death (he started as the writer in 1956). and Walt Wallet is indeed well over 100 – which is why Gasoline Alley features his grandkids, great-grandkids, and never aging handymen…
GOOD to see today’s " Tip of the hat " to the GASOLINE ALLEY strip. It’s well justified !In many an early October Jim Scancarelli has had Tracy visiting their strip, and he’s always done Justice to the ART.-I take it that’s - Uncle Walt seen with Vitamin in panel 6 today ? You can never be SURE in this strip where they AGE the characters closer to ’ real time ’ ? It might well be the now much older - Skeezix ? As we see him here :
It was a fitting end for Measles, done in by his own excesses. Loved the story. And seeing these cameos of characters from other comic strips is just as much fun as seeing the cameos and returns of the classic DT ones. Thank you, Team Tracy!
I have to applaud the Sunday colorist once again. The panel w/ the squadcar lights flashing against the pre-dawn sky in particular…really sets the mood.
I have been reading both Tracy and Gasoline Alley for well over 50 years. GA has always had a special place in my heart. I grew up with Chipper and many of his experiences such as going to Viet Nam were mirrored in my life as they happened in the strip. Before he died, my father-in-law and I were once discussing this subject and he stated that he felt the same way about the strip and grew up with Skeezix.
A great finish to the story; that’s the way Measles whole life had been heading.Shane’s colors again fantastic; the false dawn in panel two and the flashing lights are great. And guest appearances by Walt Wallet(!) and Vitamin Flintheart? Wowzers!
Thanks for the kind words, Tommygunner, yumpinyiminey, and Gweedo. Much appreciated. All kudos to Team Tracy for making the strip so very good that it inspires. I look forward to it every day, and not just because I might see…well, you know who she is. The Measles story was another winner. I love the first panel with Sunny Dell homestead in the background—the door kicked in, as the leaves fall on Measles’ shrouded corpse. Always a pleasure to see Tracy and Sam working together. Bravo!
“Yep. Too bad,” said Sam, taking one last long drag on a cigarette. He pitched the empty filter, and reached for another one, lighting it expertly with is pocket lighter. He inhaled the potent smoke of the new cigarette, and blew it out his nose. “What makes people take that stuff, anyway? Don’t they know it can kill them?”
I just checked out those strips, in 2006, Walt is 106, so, apparently, he’s now 112, not yet in the Guiness books but, seeing how he was able to survive a serious gurney accident, without a scratch, at 106, he just might make it to 120 :p
I think the BEST ending would have been for Measles to “get the draw” on DT and just as he was about to pull the trigger, he suffers a coronary and dies (Then it works for everyone) ;)
@mikeyj: The characters in “Gasoline Alley” do supposedly still age in real time, but some of them seem to do so more accurately than others—this week’s story, for example, features eight-year-old Boog Skinner (son of Rover, grandson of Clovia, great-grandson of Skeezix and great-great-grandson of Walt) and he’s clearly the age he should be. But we’ve occasionally seen Gus and Kathleen, the twin children of Chipper, and they seem to be stuck at about age 10, even though they were born in 1992.And, of course, we have Walt—the last surviving original cast member in the strip, born in 1898 (confirmed at least twice in the strip) and somehow still around at age 114. His wife, Phyllis, who couldn’t have been more than a couple years younger, passed back in 2004. All his old friends (Doc, Avery, Bill) are long gone, but Walt just keeps on ticking even as Skeezix (who is a remarkably vital and energetic 91-year-old himself) has another birthday each year…Fun fact—Vitamin Flintheart was said to be fifty when he first appeared in “Dick Tracy,” which would make him several years older than Walt!
Had to check the dates, but thestory begins on 9/1/2006 with the theft of Slim’s truck.
Tracy first appears in the GA strip on 9/5/2006, when Slim calls the police and Tracy answers on his 2-way wrist radio.
