    I never got ties. What’s the purpose? Just a way to cover unsightly shirt buttons?

    Ties were Napoleon’s idea, he told his soldiers ties were like the Ghost Shirts of the American Indians and would help them avoid being shot. He also put buttons on their sleeves so they wouldn’t wipe their noses on them. At least so go the fashion legends.

    From what I understand ties as a fashion comes to us from the French. Originally they were to protect one’s shirt from food spillage. Needless to say they had to be quite wide.
