    Uh oh, Oopsters!

This looks like one heck of a row!

In any case, Guz does have a point there.

    Until tomorrow . . . HUGAHUGAPOUNCIES!

Guz doesn’t have to suspect it — the Wizer himself gave a full confession to him and Alley last week!

Nigh-Gaunt49, as I promised a couple of days ago, this will be my last critique of your work.
    -
    The original text:
“I can feel it. Some fear and anger I sense.” Corinne tells them as she probes the Baldander’s mind as it leaps, swings and jumps from limb to limb away from them inhumanly fast.”
    -
    The edited text:
No edit, just a comment. The Baldander’s MIND leaps swings and jumps from limb to limb inhumanly fast?
    -
And in panel two, is Jinx asking Alley if he feels the Baldander’s vibes? Or is she asking Alley if he can swing from vines?
    -
Based on the portfolio you’ve presented here Night-Gaunt49, I would not hire you as a writer, illustrator, or creative director.
    -
You’ve been free in your criticism of the Benders, yet you are either unable or unwilling to apply simple editing to your own work. I believe if you haven’t already done so, you should take a course in creative writing from your local community college. Editing can be learned.
    -
Alternate Alley Oop is borderline plagiarism, which has potential for disastrous effects in either an ad agency or in-house marketing communications department.
    -
You have not given us any indication that you can draw – a vital part of comics
    -
On the positive side, characters you created work well within your stories. In fact, they could easily stand alone, without the link to Alley Oop.
    -
You have said you are able to create story lines, and bring them to closure. I’ll take your word for that. Closure is important in episodic communications.
    -
Doubtless, you and others will wonder about my qualifications to offer this critique. I have a BFA degree in advertising design. I’m retired after 35 years in marketing communications. During the last 20 years of my career I held positions of advertising manager, or marketing services manager at two multi-national firms. I post a weekly website, which I write and illustrate. The site deals mostly with small town politics.

I’m glad someone has said the kind of things I’ve been longing to say for a long time but just haven’t had the time for.

Re: ”Based on the portfolio you’ve presented here Night-Gaunt49, I would not hire you as a writer, illustrator, or creative director.” ………………..
….. ”You’ve been free in your criticism of the Benders, yet you are either unable or unwilling to apply simple editing to your own work”.
    …….. ……
”You have not given us any indication that you can draw – a vital part of comics."
    .
Fuddy, I think you are being too demanding here. I neither doubt your qualifications, nor question your motives to show Night-Gaunt the analogy between your criticism for him and his criticism of the Benders. However, is it possible you are now overextending your professional background for social leverage?
    .
Yes, the Bender artwork has been criticized, and “applications” for their replacement are rampant; however, I believe (and accept) the motives are more from social common sense than professional. Night-Gaunt has demonstrated his writing ability, especially visualization, which is subject to a fair but reasonable level of professional criticism in public; but, he has neither purported nor attempted to demonstrate any drawing skills as a basis for his criticism of the Benders.
    .
Moreover, in your own field I am sure you have had valuable staff members who are very talented in either writing or drawing, but not both. I have certainly seen this dichotomy of valuable talent with theory and lab in science; however, I am not going to reject someone in my R&D program because he/she can only demonstrate relevant theoretical talent without the corroborating lab talent … that is a separate task for me to delegate. Likewise, back in the social cartoon world, you and I can’t presume or expect both talents from one critical reader, much less a portfolio or a resume.
    .
Hopefully, I am not appearing too sanctimonious or hypocritical, because I have certainly been guilty of leveraging my professional background in annoying situations in the past. However, in situations such as these, it is just my humble and respectful observation that perhaps we should occasionally remind each other to assume appropriate limits when we publically subject others to our unsolicited professional criticism.

Personally I enjoy the FREE fan comic stuff found in the comic comments. From reading your dissertation, it seems to me that you are qualified in areas not related to comic writing. Try doing your own ‘creative’ writing comic story for a few weeks and you will see that it is far different than marketing or an illustrated newsletter. It takes a different sort of ‘creativity’ to do one of these on going spontaneous stories. Certainly requiring skills not required in the production of a website.
    My 2 cents worth.

    Night-Gaunt49, your words:
    ‘Bio
Artist and writer but nothing published. Read, write and draw."
    -
If you admire artists and writers with thick skins, you must LOVE the Benders.
    -
You have talent. Start a simple website, and post a weekly comic of your own. (A weekly will give you time to sharpen things. When you get the hang of it, you can add more days.) Tell us where we can find it. Build your own kingdom, if you will.
    -
As I’ve said before, you will need three things – talent, determination, and money.
    -
    Talent you have.
    -
Money can be an issue. You need a web site, which can be had for $10.00 or less. You need scans, which can be had at Office Max for 27 cents apiece. A scanner costs more, but is more convenient. You need an illustration program (Adobe Illustrator and Corel Draw are good). I’m guessing you can get used software on-line. I’ll get back to you on that.
    -
Determination is an issue. So far, I’ve seen you display more determination to upstage the Benders than to hone your own craft.
    -
Your opportunity to build your reputation is limited here. Re-channel your determination to build it based on YOU, not Alley Oop.
    -
If I wanted to tell you to shut up, I’d TELL you to shut up. I want you to do better than you are now. Will you? Your choice.

    @jhughey

jhughey, I’m being no more demanding than other readers here who want the Benders to quit, or who lambaste them for “creepy leaves”.
    -
    Night-Gaunt said
    “Bio

He, not I, describes himself as an artist and writer.
    -
Social leverage? Here? You’re about the only person posting, whose real name (and credentials) I know.
    -
I’ve subjected Night-Gaunt49 to what I think is fair and reasonable criticism. I promised him I would stop today – a promise I intend to keep. Night-Gaunt49 can choose to reach his full potential, or labor here, in the shadow of the Benders.
    -
Has anyone here posited that perhaps the Benders can’t afford to quit?

A great spring morning greeting to the Bender sand the readers of Alley Oop. Wizer is learning the dangers of wearing prehistoric man bling but is still not taking
responsibility for his scheming. To the pits and end the banter. I’m ready for the new arc.
