As bad as the US has been, it’s still a light of democracy in the world.

That there are those among us who wish to exclude some other voters based on their race, ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation does not speak well of a constitutional quasi-democratic republic.

Republicans are only going to count the republican ballots and then they will tell you a republican won.

Although Ortega has apparently been following an authoritarian bent lately (which I, and apparently many of his former colleagues, deplore). I remember him as someone who led the fight against the US-supported dictator Somoza and was later democratically elected President of his country. During that presidency, the US was secretly and illegally financing, training, and arming the terrorist “Contras” and running an economic embargo against the country, promising to lift it only if and when Ortega’s party was ousted in the next election by his US-backed opponent, which it was (and Ortega accepted its defeat and left, to be re-elected as President some years later). In some ways more of a small-d democrat than some US Republicans.
