To fans of Nick and Nora Charles, Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot, Charlie Chan, and Sam Spade, I recommend Neil Simon’s excellent 1976 comedy “Murder by Death”, which includes performances from Peter Falk, Eileen Brennan, Truman Capote, David Niven, Maggie Smith, James Coco, Alec Guinness, Elsa Lanchester, Peter Sellers, Nancy Walker and Estelle Winwood. Unless you’re a die-hard Falk fan (like me!), I’d pass on Simon’s followup film, 1978’s “The Cheap Detective” – the writing really didn’t measure up.
