Happy new year! What are we gonna do today? Today? Uh, nothin' I guess. Oh, I thought maybe New Year's Day was for something. Why'd you think that? Well, isn't there some reason it's in the middle of winter instead of, like, the start of springtime? Maybe so we'll go lock up why, and learn something new! Learn?! But you said happy new year!
Most civilizations DID have their new year start in Spring. The Romans had their New Years Day on March 1 (December means “10th month”), but the start of the year was moved back because of political reasons.
