OMG are there really still such racist people around that they can’t even tolerate a mixed couple in a COMIC STRIP? Really? Are we still living in the 1950s?

I never notices the mixed couple angle….glad ‘m color blind. They make a great coupla and I don’t think they have thought being mixed race at all.

I and my hubby are both w with w know adult kids, all my family married w. Evie you have to remember Val is not a teenager they should be careful. I agree both Phil and Val did talk about children. This maybe a comic strip, I feel the creator Ms. Eliot does touch on issues of today.

Wow, what a bunch of comments today. I’d rather go back to Nabuquduriuzhur’s comment, which is more on track, and say that I agree with him. Although if they’re still in the beginning stages of the relationship (how long have they been dating? Anyone know?), romance should come easier and more naturally.

@flaseflaguse: I’m not usually one for controversy or* confrontation for that matter. But yeah, I don’t believe your comment was racist but true thinking of some people, however, somethings *have changed in some places and in others it hasn’t. It depends on where you live. You need to take into consideration all things before embarking on such relationships. If I lived in West Virginia, I’m sorry I wouldn’t consider dating a white guy…in Atlanta, yes I would…

Yeah, truth always hurts. We will not all live in perfect harmony…we have a human nature that is fallen and always craves bitterness, deciet, depravity, controversy, strife, pride…you name it.

Things DO vary from place to place. Heck, out here in the West, they still have prejudices against women in engineering; if not, I might still have a full time job (not that I don’t LIKE being at home all day, but it was not really a choice).

@kreole, when you referred to a mixed romance, I honestly thought you meant a male and a female! But clearly other people didn’t think so.

and as for you, @flaseflagusa, I’ve fortunately only rarely come across people who articulate sentiments such as yours. Seems to me you’re the one who’s rotten from within. Yeccch!!

Where I live there are lots of mixed couples. We have many different cultures, from all over the world. By and large, people get along with each other. Why should that make the children suffer? You are assuming everyone wants to have white skin. Biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig assumption. If love is forbidden, then how does one end prejudice? Because if you see other people as your equals, it’s quite possible that you’ll fall in love with one of them. Dangerous! What culture do you mean when you say it’s rotten from within? Do you know how many different kinds of cultures of non-white-skinned people there are on this planet? And nothing will change it? Clearly you are rock solid in your own beliefs - you don’t sound like it would be too likely that they would ever change. So whoever you’re referring to in #4 is doomed till eternity to remain rotten? Hey! Just thought of something! Have you ever considered how rotten a culture is that has people like you in it? White people have done a lot of rotten things.

@vidazzle, that’s why the USA ought to have passed the Equal Rights Amendment. Then companies couldn’t just get away with that kind of prejudice. Well, not that easily.

I missed the comment, too. But, most surprisingly to me, is that I have been reading this comic for a year and had not noticed that Phil was different from Val. Guess I thought he had a good tan from patrolling the “beat.” I’ll look harder the next time he shows up in a strip. Has his race ever been mentioned in the comic?

RinaFarina, thanks for an excellent rebuke to that horrid comment!

Phil is African, Irish, and Peruvian. When Phil first appeared he was much lighter. Then it was revealed that Mrs. Franklin down the street is his aunt. Alix asked how if she was his aunt he is white and she is black. She said their heritage and that he takes after the Peruvian and she takes after the African.

I think Phil is African, Irish and Puerto Rican, if I remember aright. His Aunt June was telling Alix why they didn’t look much like each other.
