I don’t care a whit about football, or most sports for that matter, but I do have a story about football.
A friend of mine used to work for ABC radio in New York, and he was over on the TV side visiting a friend in the control room while a football game was on. Someone had sold advertising for the movie Heidi to (I believe it was called Bell Telephone in those days) with the understanding that Heidi was to start precisely on the hour. The guy on the board saw the football game was going to run overtime, so he tried contacting anybody he could who would have the authority to override the contract for Heidi. He couldn’t get in touch with anyone who could do this, so he’s sitting watching the clock and when it ticks up on the hour he hits the switches, the football game goes off, Heidi goes on and the switchboards downstairs light up. My friend asked if he wasn’t going to get in trouble but he said he always photocopied his orders as evidence of what he was told to do.
