The Edmund Pettus bridge was named for a CONfederate general — a traitor who engaged in armed rebellion against the United States and killed many Americans — one of the definitions of “treason” in the Constitution. After the Civil War, he became head of the KKK in Alabama. Edmund Pettus never saw, touched or crossed the bridge named for him in 1940, many years after his death in 1907.

It is obscene that a part of the federal highway system should be named for a traitor who waged war against that very government and who represented the very opposite of the values on which this nation was founded as expressed in our founding documents, however far this nation fell short of those values.

It is part of the United States Interstate Highway System — a federal infrastructure program. As such, it is under jurisdiction of the federal government. Here’s hoping that a new president will be sworn in next January 20 and correct this injustice and rename the bridge to reflect a more worthy honoree.

A man who did see and touch and cross that bridge, and who spilled his blood and endured a beating that almost cost him his life, was John Robert Lewis. Lewis represented the best of the values on which this nation was supposedly founded, and aspired at great personal sacrifice to bring the nation’s practices in line with what it preaches.

The bridge absolutely should be renamed in honor of John Robert Lewis, the “Conscience of the Congress” who represented the best of us.

Here is what his great-great granddaughter, descended from both slaves and the whites who owned and raped them, and thus most truly represents both sides of the legacy of the KKKonfederacy, had to say about the subject:

Isn’t there a sewer plant in Alabama that could be named for a traitor? This would make some people happy. How’s “The Trump Turd Herder Agency” sound?

Name a bridge, forget all about the person, or why they have a bridge with their name on it.

Finally! A realistic depiction of Jesus as he probably would’ve looked like if he’d really existed.

Sorry…but Jesus was Jewish. Other than converts, Jews living in Israel (then called Judaea, technically) had more of a Mediterranean/Arab complexion. Sorry, but reality doesn’t always fit your fantasies. I say this as someone who does NOT believe in Jesus.

Finally an accurate Jesus! The past few days I’ve seen well-meaning (I think) editorial cartoons depicting St. Peter as a white man at the Pearly Gates. I Love this! Beautiful!
