I love this one. The ideology wars rage in Congress while the important things like the thousands of dangerous bridges, declining education, immigration reform, and many other real issues that affect all of us are largely ignored. However the voters are behind it all since they keep sending the same mopes back to Congress every election.
The idea of not voting for incumbents is for people who can’t be bothered to find out the candidates’ records. The incumbent might be a whole lot more what you want than his challanger. If you can’t take 10 minutes to research who you are voting on before you go to the polls, you haven’t exactly got the moral high ground when you accuse them of being lazy.
The Republicans in congress are doing their job. Their intention is to keep everything just as it is, unless they can manage to return to the “good old days” of the 19th century, before there was a middle class and when only the landed gentry were voters. And, they have a great strategy for accomplishing this. 1. Disenfranchise everyone you possibly can, unless they are dependable Republican voters.2. Produce ads and media emphasis which emphasizes those politicians who are corrupt and incompetent. Paint all Democrats with the same slime. Lacking sufficient actual slime, simply make some up. This undermines the people’s trust in their government and makes them feel like helpless pawns, so they tune out the whole process and accept the status quo. 3. Support the “job creators”, who are the recipients of a huge portion of the GNP, although that GNP was produced by working people, who are receiving less benefit from it every day. This gives them the money to accomplish the other two goals, and leaves everyone except the “job creators” with increasingly less money to mount a counter campaign. So, this is the way we are going lose the middle class and become a country inhabited only by the very rich 1%, and a 99% who are too busy working two jobs to survive to notice.
As far as the ‘toon goes, it’s right on. I have long maintained that one of the most glaring examples of government waste and fraud is Congress.
As far as Medicaid fraud and abuse: I’ll say the same thing the NRA says: why don’t we enforce the laws already on the books? If your state allows fraud and abuse, lean on your state “representatives” and tell them to do their jobs. We don’t HAVE to accept waste and fraud as a matter of course.
And we should always remember that there is corporate welfare, in addition to social welfare. And there is much waste and fraud with corporate welfare as well. Both need to be reined in, although it seems Congress in unconcerned about corporate welfare.
The responsibility is ours, people. Do your homework and vote for the better candidate based on DEEDS, not words. And especially not just because there is an R or a D after the name on the ballot.
