I’ve never written a letter to the editor, but a few years back I ran for a local judgeship, as a Conservative, and the local paper, which is a liberal rag, called and interviewed me. I told them how I retired from 21+ years as a cop, and now drive a school bus (a trustworthy gig) and summers I work backstage security at a concert venue. I told the reporter why I was running, and how I respected and knew personally my opponent. The article said “Chip Cayer, part-time security guard, thinks current judge is doing a good job!” Never even mentioned my decades in law enforcement. Made me sound like a wanna-be. I called the reporter up, and he said “We only have so much space, I’ll make sure to correct it next time.” Of course there was no next time.
