I had a similar experience to this linked sea-story. Interestingly, our best flashing-light morse reader was a radioman; they know morse code, of course, but they learn it audibly, and type what they hear— a short-circuit from ear to fingers. Seeing it and then writing/speaking it— short-long, “A”— is totally different.
