As an election issue, reproductive rights for women is a huge problem for Republicans. With very few rare exceptions (there are a few) almost all Democrats and an overwhelming majority of Independents support the right of women to make their own medical decisions about their own healthcare, including in matters of reproduction. Even a very significant minority, but still a minority, of Republicans (especially female Republicans), think that women should have the freedom to make their own personal medical decisions about their own bodies.
The problem, however, is that a substantial majority of Republicans, over the objections of a significant but inadequate minority of their party, think that Big Intrusive Government should dictate medical choices for women, whose lives they want to micromanage and subjugate. They think POLITICIANS should be the ones to make medical decisions for women.
So Republicans with pro-CHOICE views that match the American mainstream cannot win primaries while a majority of their party favors Big Intrusive Government and POLITICIANS micromanaging women’s personal medical decisions.
When abortion becomes a major issue in a campaign, such as when Republicans like Senators Tim Scott and Lindsay Graham and Talibangelical House Speaker Mike Johnson are calling for a NATIONWIDE ban that would even hit in bright blue states, it drives voter turnout by the vast majority of voters who want Big Intrusive Government to keep its Big Intrusive Nose out of our private lives, and Republicans lose elections, as we saw in 2018, 2020, 2022 and earlier this week.
For the November 2024 general election, numerous states, including red, purple and blue, are going to have ballot initiatives to protect women’s reproductive freedom (also initiatives to legalize marijuana in more states), issues that drive young voter and PROgressive voter turnout and spell bad news for Republicans.
