Pope John XXIII, the last Pope before Francis that could remotely be considered PROgressive, died in 1963. For the next FIFTY YEARS, until Francis was selected in 2013, the Catholic Church was led by social CONservatives — Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI.
The decades of abuse scandals were perpetrated and covered up under these social CONservatives, especially Benedict XVI, née Josef Ratzinger, who was enforcer of church discipline under John Paul II.
In one especially egregious case, a Wisconsin Priest (Rev Lawrence C. Murphy) was accused of raping 200 deaf students at a Catholic school for deaf children. Local Catholic officials sought to have the priest defrocked and dismissed and turned over to authorities. Murphy was one of 58 accused priests in the Milwaukee archdiocese. It was Ratzinger who overruled the local officials to protect the rapists.
So the way the accusations against liberal Francis have unfolded is highly suspect. If he has covered up crimes, he should be held accountable (he won’t be, but should).
But so far, all we know is that Archbishop Carlo Vigano is a long-disgruntled cardinal representing the extreme CONservative wing of the Catholic church who has vigorously opposed Pope Francis’ attempts to liberalize the church. The axe he has to grind sharpened greatly when he was fired from his position as the Papal Nuncio to the United States.
So far Vigano has made allegations but, at this point, no evidence. If there is evidence, let it be produced. Otherwise it is just the whining of yet another disgruntled CONservative.
Question: if Vigano supposedly reported this five years ago based on old knowledge he had known for years, why did HE not say anything earlier — until after he got demoted? Does that not make him at least as complicit as whoever he claims to have told?
Apparently Vigano has inadvertently admitted to being complicit in the cover-up.
