Compare the Cuban regime, with whom we haven’t traded for more than fifty years, and the Chinese regime, with whom we have traded furiously for decades.
China is still disgustingly anti-human rights, but it’s not nearly as bad as it was BEFORE we commenced trade. In addition, Cuba was never, ever as bad as China was at its worst.
I can’t imagine any ordinary Cuban citizen envies the human rights available to the ordinary Chinese citizen and I can’t imagine any ordinary Chinese citizen NOT envying the human rights accorded citizens in Cuba.
Bringing Cuba into the fold so that it can benefit economically is a great, effective step to more liberty for all Cubans. Not to see that is willful blindness, i.e., stupidity.
US allies have some of the worst human rights records in the world. Why does Mr Lester care about Cuba’s abuses, but now about China’s or Saudi Arabia’s?
So Lester are you saying that the US should cut ties with any country that has political prisoners? If so I can’t wait to see Saudi Arabia vacate their embassy.
55 years of the US trying isolate Cuba and political prisoners must be so proud of Cuba record of not imprisoning them. The US has been pouting and holding its breath for 55 years with nothing to show except us being blue in the face.
Opening relations with Cuba is the best way to improve human rights there. That is why the former Batista supporters, like well, Cruz’s dad, don’t want better relations until there’s another Batista to open things up for the cartels and gambling interests of the U.S. Mafia again.

Hopefully the Castro brothers will cut back on the anti-American vitriol, someday.

Hey, Tom, why don’t you run down and demand to be let into Guantanamo to check things out?
