All this talk of someone “buying the election” is nonsense. In the end, no matter how much Mr. Bloomberg spends, primary voters still are independent and have to cast their votes for him in order for him to win. If he was paying off the voters, then I can understand the claim that he is buying an election. And if it bothers you that he is self-funded, would you feel better if three other billionaires were backing him? Twenty? One thousand? What exactly is the magic number of backers to have him meet “the standard?” In some way isn’t it better for him not to be beholden to financial backers?
