…this is driving me crazy. What is with these cartoonists and the anachronistic hammer & sickle imagery? That this is a throw-back to the ol’ days of the USSR? i.e. Hungary ’56, Czechoslovakia ’68?
The communist system is gone, but dictatorship is still alive in Russia. And the evidence seems to point that Putin will only become more erratic over time. Dangerous.
Perhaps he’s a wanna-be modern version of Tsar. Either way, he’s seeking dictatorial power, and there is some question about his long-term sanity.
Once again I bump my head against an unexpected new semantic conception in a remodeled world. Does Putin himself know what to call himself? For some of his “wise” sayings, check out his section in BrainyQuote.
I suspect there was a lot of nationalism (and good old fashioned imperialism) in what the West feared in Communism, as well.
With apologies to the late Pete Seeger:.If I had a hammer, I’d hammer in the morning….If I had a sickle, I’d harvest in the morning….
All this rhetoric reminds me of something I learned in 7th Grade (about 58 years ago) about propaganda. It went something like this: If the Soviet Union were in a 3-man race with the U.S. as one of the competitors and the U.S. won, the headlines in the U.S. would read: “The U.S. came in first!” and the headlines in the U.S.S.R. would read: “Soviets take third place!” You figure it out.
