…this is driving me crazy. What is with these cartoonists and the anachronistic hammer & sickle imagery? That this is a throw-back to the ol’ days of the USSR? i.e. Hungary ’56, Czechoslovakia ’68?

Once again I bump my head against an unexpected new semantic conception in a remodeled world. Does Putin himself know what to call himself? For some of his “wise” sayings, check out his section in BrainyQuote.

I suspect there was a lot of nationalism (and good old fashioned imperialism) in what the West feared in Communism, as well.

With apologies to the late Pete Seeger:.If I had a hammer, I’d hammer in the morning….If I had a sickle, I’d harvest in the morning….

All this rhetoric reminds me of something I learned in 7th Grade (about 58 years ago) about propaganda. It went something like this: If the Soviet Union were in a 3-man race with the U.S. as one of the competitors and the U.S. won, the headlines in the U.S. would read: “The U.S. came in first!” and the headlines in the U.S.S.R. would read: “Soviets take third place!” You figure it out. Go here for perspective:
