For someone who says he doesn’t really want the speaker’s job, Jordan is sure working hard to get it. I see 2 issues here.
With Jordan as speaker, the Congress would be a disaster.
There are (how many now? 40 Republicans?) who say they won’t vote for him, and I doubt he could count on any Democrat votes. So he’s short of the threshold of 217. (Quick question, BTW. In January, McCarthy had to meet a threshold of 218. Why the difference?)
Possible solution: the Democrats could get together with those Republicans to form a new voting bloc. They could choose a moderate candidate who would be acceptable to all, and elect that person.
Possible problem: if Gaetz objects to that treasonous (to him) cross-the-aisle cooperation, would he immediately demand an ouster vote?
