After my father died I would get phone calls at 0200 AM from my mother telling me she had won all these sweepstakes. I demanded that she read the letter to me and she refused. At some level she knew they were all a scam but she was so desperate to win that she tried to go to the bank to get money to “pay the taxes” on the supposed large winnings. I had to take access to money away from her before she sent it all away.
I had one on phone call, what was my mom’s phone number that was transferred to a cell phone and she’s been gone for 2 years, knew nothing of computers. The call male claimed from PCH asked for her, red flag, I told him this a scam, he claimed no not a scam. I was suspicious, I told him she is gone, I had husband speak to him, and then my daughter, it was a scam, he said he go to next caller. I hung up. PCH does not make a phone call.
Somehow Publishers Clearing House dropped me from their mailing list years ago. Wish I knew what I did to make that happen, I’d be willing to share it with all of you.
I have started getting slow-mail spam in official-looking envelopes that look like the government ones that you have to open by bending and tearing off the sides first.

were you expecting a golden envelope, Jason?

Yes, Jason, quite odd. He needs to learn to read the fine print.

Is that Quincy who’s eyeing it hungrily?

I feel the same way every time I get an email from the exiled Nigerian Minister of Finance.

Of course the official-looking envelope is gratuitously labelled IMPORTANT.
