Ralph: Good morning, Chester! How's it going? Chester: Not so good, Ralph. You know how a balloon is always drawn with a little rectangle there to make it look shiny? I'm having trouble making it look right! Ralph: Gee, that's too bad. Nobody really cares abut the problems of a cartoonist!
The term for that in cartoon jargon is “lucaflect”. On windows they’re traditionally four-paneled; in the eye of a character they result in the famous “pie-slice” effect..Other words specific to cartooning are “grawlix”, “plewd” and “briffit”.
