More accurately, every time they want to get out, the president says “Let’s talk,” which scares them into retreat. Talking to anyone is anathema to today’s conservatives. They feel that with God on their side they can surely win the presidency and both houses of congress; and if they don’t, America can be put on hold for another four years, why not. The rest of the world will surely wait for us to eventually get our act together.

I think the fiscal cliff may be a good thing. It won’t happen, but it would smack some sense into people.
