Funny you claim this. President Carter took office in 1977. The 1977 budget had already been set by President Ford, the deficit for 1977 was $53.7 Billion. In the next 4 years the deficits ran $59.7, $40.7, $73.8, and $79 Billion – or a total of $253. Billion. In the 8 years Reagan was in office the annual deficit never dropped below $128 Billion, and Bush I continued this, running up a total deficit of over a trillion dollars in his four years in office. http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/omb/budget/fy2013/assets/hist01z1.xls

Jimmy Peanut Atomic Scientist Carter was dumped by the voters because of the MISERY INDEX….not the lower deficits….Misery Index was total of High Unemployment and other BAD economic numbers.-Reagan got tax cuts and lower regs preventing businesses from growing and restored the ravaged US Military….to fulfill the Constitutional duty to protect America. The resulting Recovery and years of prosperity, which raised all income levels…and Reagan’s foreign policies decimated #1 enemy USSR which finally fully collapsed in 1991 with the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the soviet government.-Democrats promised to cut spending but reneged as usual, so much spending wasn’t Reagan’s but was the Democrat Congress larger deficits. The Dems ruled the House for 56 years, the source of all spending bills. It took Newt and using the House post-session speeches to help elect a GOP majority in 1994….forcing Dem. Prez Clinton to trim spending and prevented Big Spending plans from passing, like Hillary’s (pre-Obama) European-type Healthcare.-every president and every congress is to blame for government DEBT, and Obama is #1 Champion of Spending….He had control of 8 months of fiscal year 2009 budget spending….and added more to the Bush 3-month Plan….added Stimulus and other wasted spending which did not create Recovery and 4 more years of the same old same old would financially collapse the USA, IMO.

@taxthis…Right On!-Reagan was president Jan. 1981 to Jan. 1989.He was diagnosed by the Mayo Clinic in 1999 with Alzheimers. He died 6/4/04.He did not suffer “incipient” Alzheimers in the 8 years as Prez.-Obama is similiar to Carter’s administration in that Carter & the Democrat Senate gave away in 1977, the Panama Canal that was 100% designed, built and maintained until 1999.-both “inherited” a recession, and both used policies that made the recessions worse, not better. Reagan ran opposed to the Carter Misery Index (highest since WW2 total of unemployment, INFLATION, and interest rates….Carter’s spending was at the level of 23% of GNP in 1980 and Carter added new cabinet departments that would be very expensive in the future…Dept. of Education(never created better students) and the Dept. of Energy…never produced domestic energy to make the USA “energy independent”….- Yes, it will take a Reagan-type Paul Ryan to help a new president Romney produce a Reagan-type Recovery and Boom in jobs and economic expansion and prosperity for every American.

So if Alzheimers wasn’t his excuse, then what was his excuse? Just generally out of it?

@jack75287, I tried to type that url but it did not work, I think it was incomplete on your post..I WISH THIS WEBSITE WOULD PUT URLS IN OUR POSTS IN READY-TO-GO (the old gocomics used to do that)Also I miss being able to go back and edit my typos….-lonecat shame on you. The Liberals (even in the GOP) hated Reagan because he was an “outsider” to their “establishment power” (GOP and MSMedia)…and falsely charactized Reagan as a bumbling idiot, like Bozo the Clown…they were proven wrong when tons of his personal writings were found after his death, and his writings prove he was smarter than all his demonizers. Even before that, his foreign policies proved fruitful in his leading the USSR into an arms race that they were not capable of winning, to the collapse of the USSR in 1991.

lonecat said, 1 day ago@disgustedtaxpayer On March 4, 1987, Reagan said in an address to the American public: “A few months ago I told the American people I did not trade arms for hostages. My heart and my best intentions still tell me that’s true, but the facts and the evidence tell me it is not.” Was he just not paying attention? The only reason he wasn’t impeached is that Poindexter took the fall.(end quote)-Reagan spoke the truth. He would not be the first President that underlings hid things from. Have you read Ollie North’s book giving details of the aid to the Contras by selling unusable arms to Mideast warmongers? I think his account clears Reagan of having knowledge or of ordering any such operation. I thought it was a genius operation…killing 2 bad birds with one ops! Ha! As Goldwater said, extremism for patriotism is required, or something like that.Reagan did nothing impeachable. The Democrats in the House under Wright should have been impeached for sabotaging Reagan’s foreign policy and attemts to prevent a Soviet enemy foothold in the American hemisphere.
