On Wed. I placed the National Geographics that I and my household had fread on the ground floor by the door where recyclying is stored until the recyclables are collected. I asked the porter to leave them by the door so other tenants can pick them up to read. I live in a building where everyone but me belongs to a minority group, but I know that a lot of people, no matter who they are, like to view the photos in the NG and many of my neighbors are well-educated professionals. The porter ignored me (even though I spoke to him in Spanish) and began taking the magazines into the room to be ready for disposal. I am very annoyed. I couldn’t take the NGs to another neighbod because they are too heavy.
The same thing happened at my Miami condo a few years ago: A whole lot of books were thrown into a dumpster (probably from a nei=ghbor who had died). I and another neighbor, a retired professor of archaelogy, began to look through the dumpster and take some books that we liked when the porter began screaming at us. I felt like saying, “What’s a matter? Are you so illiterate that you think that books should only go to landfills?”
Arye, I agree with you about the books and magazines, but you have to see the working man’s problem, too. Even though you requested to have the NG’s left where others could take a look, he has probably been told by his boss to keep that area clear – maybe for fire hazard reasons, maybe because the boss likes a clean look. Either way, your porter would rather risk a little displeasure from you than from his boss. Maybe you could post a note in the lobby telling everyone that the NG’s are in the recycle room and to hurry and check them out before they get picked up. The guy in Miami, on the other hand, is an idiot.
Not much happening here. My black eye is clearing up nicely. We’re going to the local Renaissance Faire tomorrow. Today is my busy day at work, writing checks long distance.
I did rediscover one of the joys of life this morning. I watched my hyper-active cat chasing a moth in the laundry room. I laughed so much, and it felt so good.
